The Cusp of Everything kept me riveted. This book captures the very real conflicts and challenges of leaving the past (and one's past self) behind. The main character, Karen Walsh, is in her own transition just as her parents are going through theirs. The parents are divorcing and creating chaos for the children, Karen is aching to leave the suburbs and establish herself in the big city (NY of course). Karen has a vision of the future that does not include working in an amusement park, listening to her mom's peculiar pronouncements, or fooling around with low-class construction workers. Karen has finally shed her "loser" self-image and sees herself on the verge of a new life. She's in love, or thinks she is, and is quickly moving on to even greater heights, or so she thinks. Karen is a fish out of water. She comes from a classy background, but has no money. She is an intellectual but finds no peers at the state university or in her home town. She doesn't belong in the world that surrounds her, but also can't seem to find a way out. Everything changes when she meets Mark, a "cool" guy who also longs to escape. The rest of the story unfolds in surprising ways. I don't want to give away what happens, because it's an unusual turn of events, best discovered as you read. The story is further enhanced by the "soundtrack" of Karen's life. References to seventies songs weave throughout the book and really help to create a sense of time. I liked this book enormously. The author's voice is humorous, titlating and thought provoking.Product details

I'm not going to say I loved this. The writing was a little juvenile, perhaps because it's first person voice of an 18 year old. But I liked its concept - a coming of age story densely threaded with songs. The songs are on the radio, on the stereo, at clubs, in bars, and in her head - they're everywhere. The author said she wanted to write a book with a soundtrack - alas, the technology isn't quite there yet. The book comes with a pages-long soundtrack at the back, and there's a website with a Spotify list, an iTunes soundtrack, and links - so you can find lots of the music - it's just not right there in your head.
The book also appealed to me because I'm just a bit younger than the protagonist, and grew up not far from where the book is set. So, while I wasn't working at Rye Playland the summer before college, or hanging out in diners with boyfriends, or driving a gas guzzling clunker, lots of the book rang true. I knew people that did those things, and I kept thinking about them as I was reading.
So, big whiff of nostalgia, for the music, the time, the setting.
If you were young in the 70s/80s and have even a passing interest in popular music, this book is for you. A really good and easy read. I highly recommend it.
I couldn't put this book down once started.. you know, the kind of book, that you put your life on hold for, because you want to read and finish the book. It is a fun read... filled with Music, love, sex, deals with sexual identity, the joys, anticipations, and heartaches of growing up and the importance of friendship. It transcends the "time slot" of the 1980's.. and at the same time is fun for those that remember where we were when that particular song came out. A fun fast read !
I'm older than the demographic for this book, but I certainly know and can relate to all of the musical references in this great read!!! This book is a must for anyone who has experienced the process of growing up and remembering the best and the worst of those times. It's a quick read, full of truly interesting, fun and sometimes sad remembrances about this girl's environment, which again, was not the one I personally experienced. I was able to relate to the main character, especially her friendships. I've given the book as gifts to my daughter-in-law's, and some friends of my own age. So far, great interest and reviews. This is a unique concept of combining music and story, and I think the author may start a trend. Am off to buy another 3 copies as gifts.
The Cusp of Everything is a book I'm not allowed to read in bed at night while my husband is sleeping because I wake him up with my helpless laughter.
The book begins with a bang on July 4, 1975 -- probably the height of the '70s music -- at a tawdry amusement park (Rye Playland), where the recent high-school graduate Karen Walsh works the "monkey race," one of the park's many fixed games. Probably no one has evocated the smell, sweat and sounds and cotton-candy cheap thrills of an amusement park, and its mix of dead-end managers; reluctant teenaged help; teen-age crushes complete with after-hours sex in cars; and shrill, dazed customers and their grubby children as Laura Huntt Foti in her debut novel.
Set against an incredibly evocative backdrop of '70s music (for which the author provides links to YouTube renditions), this coming-of-age novel details' Karen's emerging sense of self and her values amidst her clashes with her dysfunctional family (including her self-involved divorced mother); an unobtainable 'boyfriend;' and various doomed friends. An ill-advised, almost fatal unannounced car trip to visit someone's crush at an upstate college and a diasterous Thanksgiving dinner with her divorced parents ("where's the Scotch?") are alone worth the price of the book.
Some parts of the book are etched on my mind -- I have to avoid thinking about the word "boing!" during serious moments, like job interviews or funerals. I highly recommend this book.
